Phillip David Lerner, M.D.June 18, 1941 ~ June 26, 2017 (age 76)
Phillip David Lerner, M.D., 76, passed away June 26, 2017.
Phillip was born in Milwaukee, WI to Shirley and Maurice Lerner. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda; brother, Robert; son Joshua, daughter-in-law Nataliya, and grandson Daniel; son Michael; and son-in-law Mike.
After medical school, Phillip joined the U.S. Public Health Service and did his surgical residency in Staten Island, NY and Anchorage, AK. He moved to Pinellas County in 1975 and was a general surgeon here for almost 30 years. He treated many patients from the Clearwater Free Clinic in his office. He served on the board of the Pinellas County Medical Society. After retiring, Phillip made five trips to Haiti to volunteer as a surgeon, primarily at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Deschappelles. He learned Haitian Creole so that he could talk to his patients and understand the culture. He also spoke Russian and French. Phillip was reserved; he was the one taking the pictures of events, editing them at home, and sharing them with others. Active until the end, he attended his 50th reunion for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine a few weeks ago. His wish in his final days was that all his family members, friends, and neighbors knew how much he cared about them.
Services will be held at 10 am on Friday, June 30 at Temple Beth-El, 400 Pasadena Ave. S., St. Petersburg. Interment will follow at Royal Palm Cemetery – South.
