Obituary of Steven D Jewell

Steven D. Jewell

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved brother, Steven D. Jewell, 60, on March 23, 2024, in St. Petersburg after a brief illness. He was born in Neptune, NJ, to Howard and Marian Jewell on November 27, 1963. Steve never married and had no children, but his life was filled with friends from his childhood, high school, college, and all of his career moves. While at Ocean Township High School in New Jersey, he developed his passion for music and played guitar with classmates. That passion continued throughout his life as he played in several local bands. Steve attended Fairleigh Dickenson University (NJ), where he majored in electrical engineering and founded a chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He left college to work briefly at Automated Control Concept in Neptune (NJ), where he did computer aided design. Then Steve entered Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business, with a specialization in aviation.

Steve went on to work at Continental Airlines (now United Airlines) as a reservations agent for close to 25 years, which gave him a chance to take a site-seeing trip around the world. Steve continued to play guitar and became an expert in Beatles lore, eventually working at the Hard Rock Vault in Orlando as a Beatles expert. Steve moved to St. Petersburg around 30 years ago and grew to love it. He was particularly honored to become a docent at the Holocaust Museum, where he guided visitors and school groups to understand the plight of the Jewish people through that terrible time. He loved volunteering at the Salvador Dali Museum and became an expert on the artist.

Everyone who knew Steve truly loved him. He maintained close friendships with dozens of devoted people from all walks of his life, from when he was 4 years old to his last days. Equally, his family and relatives always enjoyed Steve’s company. His sense of humor was legendary, and he found a way to make anyone laugh. He was a dedicated son and always made a point to visit his parents for special occasions, no matter how hard the circumstances of travel. Steve is survived by his parents, Howard and Marian Jewell of Tinton Falls, NJ, his sister Sharon Silverman and brother-in-law Harry Silverman of Ocean, NJ, sister Susan Jewell of Springfield, VA, and nephews Kevyn and Michael Silverman.

Steve’s memorial will be held at 1:00 on Wednesday, March 27, at Anderson McQueen Chapel at 2201 Dr Martin Luther King Jr St N in St. Petersburg. Visitation begins at noon. A Rabbi will perform the service. Contributions in Steve’s memory may be made to the Holocaust Museum or Wounded Warriors.
